A decade after its delivery, Changpin Radial Gate in Beijing's Changping District remains fully operational-a testament to the engineering quality of Rockerhill, the manufacturer that designed and supplied the structure's radial gates.
Located on the upper reach of the Jingmi Water Diversion Canal, the Changpin Sluice Gate is a three-bay flood discharge structure. Each bay is equipped with a radial gate-also known as a Tainter gate-featuring a curved face plate that rotates about a horizontal pivot trunnion. This design configuration allows the gate to transmit hydrostatic pressure directly through the pivot axis, significantly reducing the operating force required for opening and closing.
The gate is designed with a discharge capacity of 388.00 cubic meters per second, while the downstream Changpin River has a flood conveyance capacity of 80.00 cubic meters per second. The structure serves as a critical flood-diversion outlet for the Jingmi Water Diversion Canal, one of Beijing's primary water conveyance arteries. During flood seasons, when water levels in the canal reach design depth with a rising trend, the Changpin Sluice Gate is activated to divert floodwaters into the Changpin River, thereby protecting the canal and downstream waterways from inundation.
Beyond its primary flood-control function, the gate also plays a role in ecological water replenishment. In recent spring seasons, the Changpin Sluice Gate has been opened as part of coordinated water-diversion operations to supply ecological flow to downstream rivers and reservoirs.
Rockerhill, established in China in 2011, supplied the radial gates for the structure. its radial gates are engineered to withstand water pressures up to 50 meters of head, with single gates capable of spanning more than 30 meters. The gates feature heavy-duty steel trunnions mounted on concrete abutments, supporting loads exceeding 10,000 tons.
The Changpin Sluice Gate's continued reliable performance after ten years of service underscores the durability and engineering integrity of Rockerhill's hydraulic gate systems. The structure remains an indispensable component of Beijing's flood management and water resource allocation infrastructure.
