Multimedia Filter

Multimedia sand filters are a low-cost method preferred for the removal of suspended solids such as silt, clay, colloidal in water. It filters the organic and inorganic solids that may cause turbidity from the water and makes them usable. Although it is used in many different areas, it is the most effective method especially preferred for removing turbidity. Although multimedia sand filters are preferred in the pre-treatment stage of ground and surface waters, they can also be used in wastewater treatment systems to remove the turbidity of the purified water. The factors of multimedia sand filters, whose operating and filtration degrees vary depending on different factors, also change. Having these factors in sufficient stages means that you can reach water of the purity you want.

Benefits of Multimedia Filter

Enhanced Filtration Efficiency

The layered design of multimedia filters enables them to remove smaller particles and contaminants compared to single-media filters. This makes them a highly efficient solution for applications where water quality is critical.

Improved Water Clarity

Multimedia filters excel in reducing turbidity and enhancing water clarity. This is especially important for industries like food processing and pharmaceuticals, where water clarity directly impacts product quality.

Prolonged Equipment Lifespan

By removing sediments and debris, multimedia sand filters protect downstream equipment such as pumps, valves, and membranes from damage. This reduces wear and tear, leading to longer equipment lifespans and lower maintenance costs.

Versatile Applications

Multimedia filters are suitable for a wide range of applications, from industrial water treatment to domestic water purification. Their adaptability makes them an ideal solution for the diverse water quality challenges faced in Thailand.

Cost-Effective Solution

Investing in a multimedia filter water treatment system can lead to significant cost savings in the long run. By reducing equipment damage, minimizing maintenance requirements, and improving process efficiency, these filters offer excellent value for money.

Eco-Friendly Operation

Multimedia filters contribute to sustainable water management by reducing waste and optimizing resource use. They require minimal energy for operation and can be integrated into environmentally friendly water treatment processes.

Types of multi-media filters

Fibreglass

Fibreglass filter tanks are lighter than those made of steel and they come in different sizes, with the widest measuring 1.6 m (63 in) in diameter.

Steel

Painted steel and stainless steel filters are custom-built and much sturdier than fibreglass filters. They also come in bigger sizes, with tanks up to 3.66 m (12 ft.) in diameter.

Applications of Multimedia Filter

Power Generation

Employed to remove suspended solids and colloids from boiler feed water, enhancing steam quality and prolonging boiler lifespan.

Power Generation

Primarily used for reverse osmosis pre-treatment, eliminating large particulate impurities from water to protect reverse osmosis membranes and ensure stable water quality during production.

Metallurgy

Utilized in the treatment of blast furnace cooling water to prevent pipe blockages and scaling, ensuring uninterrupted equipment operation.

Electronics

Applied in the pre-treatment stage of ultrapure water production to meet production requirements and safeguard the quality of electronic products.

Components of A Multimedia Filter

Filter Tank

Everything goes into the filter tank, which is usually made of stainless steel, FRP, or epoxy-coated steel. Steel is used since it can handle high temps and lots of pressure.

Media

The media is the carbon or coal, sand, and garnet we discussed in the last section.

Internal Upper And Bottom Distributors:

At the bottom are distributors that prevent the media from leaving the tank. At the top are distributors that distribute and maintain the flow as the filter does its job. The distributors are usually made of 80 PVC or stainless steel.

Valves

The valves operate uniquely according to the type of cycle the multimedia filter is going through. Common types of valves include automatic electric, pneumatic, or manual valves. However, some industries don’t accept electric valves in filtration systems. They require manual ones. Nonmetallic valves are most commonly used for seawater.

Controller

The controller regulates the automation of the filter. The controller is made of PLC, a digital stager, or an electromechanical timer. The kind of controller you pick is usually whatever works best with the main control in your facility.

Face piping

This connects all the valves, allowing the whole process to work seamlessly. Face piping is made of 80 PVC, stainless steel, or epoxy-coated carbon steel. You’ll determine what type of face piping to use based on whether your application is indoor or outdoor and what temperature and pressing your system operates at.

Flow controller

The flow controller goes onto the drain outlet. It controls the backwash flow rate and keeps the media inside the filter tank.

How Multimedia Filters Work

Since the multimedia system has different layers, it can easily filter the polluting factors in the water. The filtration rates selected by looking at the pollution rate of the water and the polluting factors are also determined in this way. This system, which can operate fully automatically, also performs backwashing automatically depending on the time and pressure difference. Thanks to this process, the sand filter, which keeps the particles purified from the water, is cleaned and inefficient operation is prevented when it reaches saturation. Multimedia sand filters have synthetic tanks and multi-way valves. The reason for this is that there is no disruption due to small flow rates in the water flow. Apart from this, if high flow rates are used, optionally epoxy coated galvanized tanks or containers made of stainless steel can be used. Multimedia sand filters have single or two-tank filters operating in parallel. In systems with a single tank, the filter column consists of quartz and multi-grade sand. Backwash process can be adjusted according to time and pressure difference. In models with a single tank, the water flow of the system is stopped during the backwash process. In systems with two tanks operating in parallel, backwashing is done with the help of purified water passing through the other tank in turn.

Required Conditions for the Efficient Operation of Multi-Media Sand Filters

Multimedia sand filters are the most effective method, especially preferred for removing turbidity in water. Since a certain flow rate is required during the filtration period, a suitable system is required. In order for the filtration to be successful, a filter should be preferred according to the water to be purified, as the structure of suspended solids and substances causing turbidity in the water can also affect the working system. In addition, the water to be filtered in the multimedia sand filter system must have certain properties. The water that can fully meet these characteristics will have a near-perfect purification opportunity. In addition to these features, the amount of water required for the backwash phase after the process must be met correctly. If all these conditions are met, water of the desired purity can be obtained.

Essential Maintenance Tips of A Multimedia Filter

Regular Inspection
Schedule routine inspections of multimedia filters to assess their condition and performance. Look for signs of sediment buildup, channeling, or media compaction, which can indicate the need for cleaning or media replacement.

Backwashing
Backwashing is a crucial maintenance procedure for multimedia filters, helping to dislodge trapped particles and restore filtration capacity. Follow manufacturer guidelines for backwashing frequency and duration, ensuring thorough cleaning of the filter media.

Media Replacement
Over time, the filter media in multimedia filters may become exhausted or ineffective due to particle accumulation and compaction. Monitor media condition and consider periodic replacement to maintain optimal filtration performance.

Chemical Cleaning
In cases of severe fouling or biofilm formation, chemical cleaning may be necessary to restore filter efficiency. Use appropriate cleaning agents and follow recommended procedures to dissolve deposits and sanitize the filter media.

Pressure Monitoring
Monitor system pressure regularly to detect signs of clogging or flow restriction within multimedia filters. Sudden increases in pressure may indicate the need for immediate maintenance or backwashing to prevent system damage.

Preventive Maintenance Schedule
Develop a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule for multimedia filters, outlining tasks, frequencies, and responsible personnel. Regularly review and update the maintenance plan to adapt to changing conditions and optimize filter performance.
