What is a Clarifier?

A clarifier is a settling tank that uses gravity to separate suspended solids (sludge) from liquids in water/wastewater treatment. It allows heavier particles to settle at the bottom while clarified water flows out from the top.

1.Coagulation-Flocculation Support: Receives chemically treated water where micro-flocs aggregate into settleable particles.
2.Gravity Settling: Slow-flow design allows solids to descend as sludge while clarified water rises....

Advantages of Clarifiers

High Efficiency

Removes up to 95% of settleable solids.

01

Low Energy Use

Relies on gravity, minimizing power consumption.

02

Chemical Reduction

Often reduces need for coagulants/flocculants.

03

Scalability

Suitable for small to large-scale operations.

04

Sludge Concentration:

Produces dense sludge for easier dewatering.

Clarifier In Water Treatment Plant

Main Features

Design Shape

Circular or rectangular.

Flow Type

Inclined plates/tubes (lamella) or conventional horizontal flow.

Sludge Removal

Scrapers/rakes (mechanical) or hydraulic suction.

Retention Time

Adjustable based on influent load.

Surface Loading Rate

Critical for efficiency (m³/m²/day).

Types of clarifiers

Primary Clarifiers

Treat raw wastewater (solids removal before biological treatment).

Secondary Clarifiers

Settle biological floc (e.g., post-activated sludge).

Lamella Clarifiers

Use inclined plates/tubes to shorten settling distance—compact and high-capacity.

Solids Contact Clarifiers

Combine mixing, flocculation, and settling in one unit.

Ballasted Flocculation

Add weight (e.g., microsand) to accelerate settling.

Applications of clarifiers

Municipal WWTPs: Primary/secondary treatment stages.
